The Meaning
“The Promise” painting was done for my sister to illustrate God fulfilling His promise to give her the right husband and children that she wanted. This was a miracle in her life that my sister and I could never forget and this act of God gave me relief and hope for the both of us. At one point in her life, she stopped her menstrual cycle and then it really seemed impossible for her to have a child, but it obviously was not for God.
A Miracle
In her womb is first child Olivia, with a tribal-looking Japanese cross with a symbol over her body which I believe means, “I give to you.” I had asked my Asian roommate that knew the language, and meaning of this symbol and that was what he had told me. I was amazed at what my roommate had told me and it just confirmed what God had promised my sister in the first place.
A Promise Fulfilled
My sister loves to watch sunsets and says she can she the beauty of God in them, so I did this piece with that in mind from a picture of her looking out of her apartment in Port Ewen, New York.
This piece reminds me of “Embryos” which I did around the same time.
The Process
This is another piece that was very difficult for me to do, and I struggled through the process of it all. I had no experience in portraits or background landscapes. I was in the process of learning how to do them both and still am today. It was interesting to me how the baby in the womb looked so much better than my sister and the background. It seemes I am much better at doing strange and spiritual invisible expressions which are not so well defined in the visible, natural realm.
